Scrawling Wall

In the mid to late 1980's (eventually closing sometime in the mid-1990's), Jelly's Books-Games-&-Music had a space at 404 Piikoi (now the home to KHON-TV/Honolulu). The warehouse was home to a waterbed outlet, a framing shop and a map lady who went by the name of Miss Claire on the second floor.

Someone had the idea to place blank plastic placards with velcro backing on them and have people put up drawings, messages and whatever else on the wall fronting Jelly's. Part of it was to curb graffiti though most of the work was poetry, free form art...really cool stuff. Sure, some of it was just kids having fun though there was enough eye candy to keep it interesting.

Eventually, one of the offices on the second floor that was extra storage space was partially converted into the office for SCRAWLING WALL, the 'zine.

Mari Imamura, Rauol Vehill, Crazy George, Mike Sturges and others contributed to this fledgling paper. It featured editorials, record reviews, gossip and a few far-far-far-left-of-center political thoughts to whet one's whistle as well as reprints of the placards that were featured on the namesake wall.

It was a free paper with ad space...sort of what the Honolulu Weekly started out as: rebellious, uncensored and ironic. Least that's how I remember it.
